Manship Artists Residency presents CODA

Jun 30, 2022Arts & Culture, Press Release

Manship Artists Residency is celebrating its fifth anniversary as a nonprofit artists residency that has served 350 artists, including members of the cast and crew of CODA, since purchasing the summer residence and studio of sculptor Paul Manship in 2017. Called Starfield, this idyllic location is where the film’s epic kiss took place.

Manship Ar+sts Residency is honored and excited to host a screening of CODA, Best Movie of 2022 at the Cabot as a fundraiser for the artist’s residency. There will be a cocktail reception before the film and a sign+talk back afterward with Best Supporting Actor Troy Kotsur, Best Adaptive Screenplay Writer Sian Heder, Actor Daniel Durant, and Hollywood Producer and Gloucester native Sarah Green, who will moderate the conversation.

Based on the 2014 French picture, La Famile Bélier, CODA tells the story of Ruby, the only hearing person in her deaf family. As a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), Ruby finds herself torn between pursuing her passion at Berklee College of Music and her fear of abandoning
her family when their fishing business is threatened. Presented as a local, Gloucester story, CODA also puts the experience of the Deaf in front of people of all abili*es, drama*cally amplifying awareness of the talent and power of Deaf creators.

Manship Artists Residency is an international, interdisciplinary ar*sts residency located at the environmentally significant former summer residence and studio of sculptor Paul Manship, creator of the Prometheus Fountain at Rockefeller Center. Manship thanks Apple TV+ for making this special event possible.
