NAA Gallery Shop, Parker River National Wildlife Refuge
REFUGE is a collaborative visual arts and environmental advocacy project created by the Newburyport Art Association in partnership with The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and the Audubon/Joppa Flats Education Center.The project is part of the NAA guest curator program, designed to bring new perspectives, new partnerships, and new artists to the NAA. The guest-curator for this project is Joe Donnelly.
CURATORIAL STATEMENT
The entire world has sought refuge this past year from a threatening virus that continues to take lives. People learned to adapt to pandemic isolation, with many finding strength in the beauty of nature, which inspired them to persist, stimulated their senses, and motivated them to create. Yet, while providing refuge for us, nature itself is experiencing its own threat; many of the special places near Newburyport may not survive this century. Artists are well attuned to this irony of seeking refuge from a source in crisis. REFUGE exhibits artwork created during the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting each artist’s personal relationship to nature, interpreting the fragility of the natural world around us, and exploring the complex relationships and responsibilities between people and place.
The project takes place across three venues, the Newburyport Art Association gallery shop, the Parker River National Wildlife Visitors Center Auditorium, and the Joppa Flats Education Center yard. Small two-dimensional and three-dimensional works will be exhibited in the NAA gallery shop. Larger two-dimensional works will be installed on the walls in the Visitor’s Center, where film/video/sound work may also be shown. Joppa Flats Education Center’s backyard will be home to an outdoor art installation created in partnership with a local school and students. The project will be complemented by a moderated panel discussion on the intersection of environment, art, and science in the Parker River Visitor’s Center auditorium.
Artists are invited to submit art and proposals for art that respond to or connect with the curatorial prompt, broadly interpreted:
NAA Gallery shop: Small 2-D or 3-D
Parker River National WildLife Refuge Visitor’s Center: Large 2-D works for auditorium
Parker River National WildLife Refuge Visitor’s Center: video or audio work
ELIGIBILITY:
The show is open to all artists, NAA members and non-members, 18 years of age or older.
Although membership is not a requirement for entry, we invite you to consider becoming an NAA Artist. Learn more about membership here.
ENTRY FEE:
There is no entry fee
MEDIA:
Acrylic, Digital Art, Drawing, Fine Crafts, Mixed Media, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Watercolor. Installations, reproductions of original work, and Giclee prints cannot be accepted.

REQUIREMENTS:
All work should be created between March, 2020 and September 2021 and must have not been exhibited in a previous NAA gallery show.
Proposed new works encouraged and accepted – work does not need to be created or completed at the time of submission.
Photos printed on metal with proper hanging hardware are accepted.
2D works must be framed and ready to hang with screw eyes or D-rings and wire.
Metal frames must have hardware that screws securely in the track.
Plexiglass or glass covered drawings, prints, photographs, and watercolors are accepted. Frameless glass or plexiglass, frames with tension, or saw-tooth hangers cannot be accepted. Gallery wrapped canvas must be stapled on the back.
Gessoed or painted sides are acceptable.
No wet paintings
DIMENSIONS
-For NAA Gallery Shop: 2D framed dimensions no larger than 16×18 inches or 188 square inches. Sculpture and 3-dimensional work must be less than 1 foot in height, 10 pounds or less, and fit within a 1×1 foot area.
-For PRNWR Auditorium Gallery: 2D framed dimensions no larger than 60×40 inches or 2400 square inches.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
-Submissions and proposals are accepted by the guest curator on a rolling basis
-Submissions open on June 25, 2021 and close on August 15, 2021 or when capacity has been reached.
-Digital submissions only.
-You may enter up to two works of art or two proposals in JPEG (.jpg) format.
-Images should include the submission only, exclude any mat, frame, and background.
-One image per work.
-Sculpture entries may include one additional digital image per work.
-Enter online using the linked google form.
Required submission materials:
1) Image of the work (if it is an existing artwork)
2) Images of representative artwork for proposals (if you will create a new work for
the show). The representative artwork should give the curator a good sense of you as an artist.
3) Description of proposed work (for proposals only)
4) Image or artwork size (unframed, image only, no mat). Approximate image size
for proposals.
5) Image size framed
6) Artist’s statement about the work (100 word max)

-All accepted work is subject to review and must comply with the NAA framing standards.
-No artwork substitution is allowed
-Submission of your entry constitutes your agreement with all the terms of this Call for Entry
-Submission of your entry acknowledges the right of the NAA to reproduce artwork for marketing purposes.
Receiving will happen at NAA and at Parker River Wildlife Refuge on Sunday, September 26th, 2021 between 11:00 am – 5:00 pm
SALES AND INSURANCE
All work must be for sale. Work in the PRNWR will be for sale via the online gallery only. The NAA retains a commission of 40% for works sold, with 10% donated to Mass Audubon and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Works will be handled with all possible care. NAA provides insurance up to 65% of the value declared by the artist from the day of receipt of the artwork to the final published pickup date. NAA is not responsible for work not picked up after Monday, November 1, 2021.
IMPORTANT DATES
Exhibition dates: Friday October 1, 2021 – Sunday, October 31, 2021
Artworks are accepted on a rolling basis. Submission period, June 15, 2021 – August 15, 2021 at 5pm.
Notification of accepted works: Rolling Basis.
Receiving for accepted works: Sunday, September 26th, 11a.m.-5p.m.
Opening: Friday October 1, 2021. Opening Reception TBD
Pick-up works: Monday November 1, 12:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Artists bear responsibility for pickup on date stated above. Work left beyond that date is no longer the responsibility of the NAA and after 60 days become the property of the NAA.
