Castle Hill on the Crane Estate is a National Historic Landmark owned and cared for by The Trustees. It is the former summer estate of Chicago industrialist Richard T. Crane, Jr. and his family. Each summer (1910-1949) the Crane family entertained guests on this magnificent property that featured gardens; a saltwater swimming pool; a maze; and the Grand Allee, a 1/2 mile rolling lawn lined with hedgerows and statuary. The Stuart-style mansion that graces the top of the hill is now used for weddings, tours, and public events. The grounds are open daily, 8 am – 5 pm. In normal years, the Crane Estate offers tours of the house and landscape; cultural events throughout the year, including summer Picnic Concerts, Crane Estate Art Show & Sale, Christmas at Castle Hill, and Fire & Ice at Castle Hill; and Crane Outdoor Adventure Programs, including full moon hikes, kayak paddles, trips to Choate Island, and adventures for families. Currently, the Crane Estate is offering landscape tours and some Crane Outdoor Adventure Programs. Landscape visitation, including picnicking, is encouraged. Advance reservations are required.
