Call for Artists for August Exhibit

Call for Artists for August Exhibit

Buttonwoods Museum is proud to announce our upcoming exhibit in August 2024, “A Seat at the Table,” in celebration of National Diversity Awareness Month. Inspired by Shirley Chisholm’s powerful quote, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair,” this exhibit aims to amplify the voices and experiences of marginalized community members. We invite artists from our LGBTQA+, Black, Brown, Native, disabled, and female-identifying community members to submit design proposals for decorating a chair that will be displayed at a large oval table.

The title of the exhibit pays homage to Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman in Congress (1968) and the first woman and African American to seek the presidential nomination from a major political party (1972). We’ve also received permission from the Kennedy Institute to use this title.

Proposal submissions are due by the end of May 2024. To submit your design proposal please send your ideas to jwilliams@buttonwoods.org by May 31.
Buttonwoods Museum will provide the folding chairs for the selected artists to decorate.

We encourage artists to bring their unique perspectives and creativity to this important exhibit, highlighting the diverse voices and stories within our community. Together, let’s create a space where everyone has a seat at the table.
